Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article analyzes the development of the concept of identity in the modern Lithuanian theatre when transiting from the modern to the postmodern theatre aesthetics. The aim of the study is to reveal the influence the changing concept of identity made on the most closely related element of the scenic art, i. e. the actor and the principles of creation of a role and the new artistic strategies, provoked by such changes. In the space of the postmodern discourse the problem of identity and body of the subject becomes one of the most essential ones. The postmodern worldview is united by the concepts of the changed language, knowledge (perception) and imaging (representation of the body). The said changes in thinking determined another view of the body and identity of the actor and encouraged the theatre artists to search for new possibilities for artistic expression. The modern theatre started to reflect the relation between the authentic identity and the body, the body and the language. The development of the concept of the body and the identity of the actor in the modern theatre is influenced by several post-structuralist categories, i. e. the post-structuralist criticism of the integral subject, identical to itself and the J. Derrida’s criticism of the metaphysics of presence. The article examines the transformations of the principles of structuring of the role, related with the postmodern concept of the body and identity and attempts to outline the development of the concept of the identity of an actor and the essential differences between the modern and postmodern dynamics of the relations between the actor’s body / identity / character / text.
