ENThe legal proceedings taken against Filomats and Filarets were deliberately arranged by the Russian authorities. The idea of defending the right to preserve their national identity professed in secret associations was to be soon suppressed by Nikolay Novosiltsov - representative of the Russian administration in Vilnius. It was due to his decision that Adam Mickiewicz, 19 other Filarets and more than a dozen high-school students were exiled from the Province of Lithuania to remote territories in Russia. He choked the flourishing intellectual life of the city and forced Duke Adam Czartoryski to relinquish his role in the political life of the Russian Empire. It is events of such a kind that are the subject of this reconstruction. Thanks to the source materials, events related to the investigation have been reconstructed and chronologically arranged. The reconstruction is concerned with events which unfolded between 3/15 May 1823 and the end of November 1824. The work consists of three parts: Introduction, Reconstruction chronicling the trial, and Appendices.
