Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Vilnius; Antrasis pasaulinis karas, 1939-1945 (World War II); Sovietizacija; Tarybų Sąjunga; Vokietija (Germany); Vilnius; WWII; Sovietization; Soviet Union; Germany.

ENThe newly discovered archive documents evidence the gratuitousness of the statements, found in the Soviet propaganda and the official historiography that the Molotov – Ribbentrop Pact provided the Soviet Union a truce, distanced the beginning of the war, prevented the war on two fronts and abolished the external political isolation of the USSR. The two states not only divided the territories, which did not belong to them according to any spheres of influence, but also made the independent existence of Poland and the Baltic States doubtful. The resolution of the fate of the small states was based by force. The news on the undersigning of the treaty raised pessimistic mood in Lithuania, while the diplomats of Estonia and Latvia viewed the document more positively, but only on the condition that "no secret agreement regarding the division of the Baltic Region exists". The Russians, when resolving the fate of the Baltic States during the negotiations both with the coalition of England and France and with Germany, on the eve of the war and at the very beginning of the war did not trouble themselves to execute any active foreign policies in Lithuania and in other states of the region, they only observed the situation. The reaction of the Western states to the events of June of 1940 was quite calm, as Moscow had foreseen. Paris surrendered to Germany on 14 June and England was concerned only with its own safety. Moreover, London was interested in withdrawing the USSR from being allies with Germany and attract it to its side. The USA, which did not accept the annexation of the Baltic Region, understood that the region eventually will have to be controlled by either the USSR or Germany. The capitulation of France, undersigned on 22 June only enhanced the climate.
