ENThe first part of the report focuses on the history of the appearance of the UN Depository Library at Vilnius University, emphasizing the role of Professor Levas Vladimirovas in the establishment of the United Nations Depository Library. In 1964-1970 being the director of the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold Library L. Vladimirovas made it possible for Vilnius University Library to become the United Nations Depository Library. That is why in 2000 UN Depository Library was named in honour of Levas Vladimirovas. The establishment of UN Depository Library was a very important political event as in the Soviet Union the opening of new UN Depository Libraries was thought to be pointless. Rising numbers of UN Depository Libraries could have made the documents of various international organizations available for larger number of people and the UN was not always in favour of the Soviet Union home and foreign policies. Despite the resistance of the Soviet Foreign Affairs Ministry, Levas Vladimirovas's enormous efforts turned to be a success - Lithuania - the only Soviet republic (except Ukraine and Belarus which were members of the UN) got the right to establish the UN Depository Library. The second part of the report focuses on the structure of the UN Depository Library and the importance of its funds to Lithuanian cultural, social and political life. This part of the report emphasizes the thematic variety of the Library's funds as they consist not only of the United Nations, but also of its specialized agencies, such as UNESCO, World Health Organization, International Atomic Energy Agency, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, International Labour Organization, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, International Monetary Fund, International Court of Justice, World Bank publications. The report also emphasizes that the UN Depository Library is noted not only for the thematic variety of its funds but also for the different forms of publications. Library funds consist of books, periodicals, official documents, masthead documents, posters, CD-ROMs, videos, Internet resources. From the latter it is important to mention data bases, such as the United Nations Optical Disk System and the United Nations Treaty Collection On-line, access to which here in Lithuania has only our Library.
