Summary / Abstract:

ENThe author shows the life and creative path of Gottlieb Kisling (1790 -1846) one of the most prominent of Lithuanian printmakers of the 19th c., his aesthetic and creative views and ideals are analyzed. G. Kisling was born in German artisan’s family in Vilnius. He studied graphic art at Vilnius University, his teacher and his relative was Isidor Weiss, later he studied under the leadership of a famous professor Joseph Saunders, some years he improved himself at art schools of Germany and Italy. After returning to Vilnius he thought at Drawing Department of University till 1832. In the article is presented not investigated never announced source in Lithuanian art research, very important to understand the artists attitude towards his creation, the fragment of diary, which has been written visiting European countries. The manuscript is kept in Cracow the Czartoryskie Library. The diary („Wiadomość historyczna i naukowa ośmiu szkół malarstwa“) was written by artist according the instructions that were given by Vilnius University teachers Fridrich Lehman and J. Rustem, and according to the works of art history and impressions of himself. It was devoted to the govering body of Vilnius University Arts’ Department, which desired to know processes being in European art schools. The gathered materials were used also by the artist himself in his studies and work. One part has survived, written in Milan in which the best and famous European painting schools (Florence, Rome, Venice, Lombardy, French, German, Duth) are discussed and their development, the prominent representatives and most characteristic features of artistic language.The artist valued the Antique heritage, the Renaissance masters’ art (especially Rafael) he aimed to value the artistic heritage of all nations, emphasizing the qualities of every school. In this article author perceives the academic influence and features of the early end of romanticism. Evident characteristic of G. Kisling text is his wish to speak exclusively about the problems of the plastic. The artist does not discuss the themes and ideas of creation but analyzes the general conclusion of relation composition, colouring, nature studies and forms, also other types of decision of artistic language problems. The peculiarity of artist’s interest, also as J. Rustem’s, is very important technical doing and „trade’s“ questions. The other part of the article deals with the discussing of artist’s graphic works, created up 1832. The author thinks, that the artisan’s attitude to creation was close to J. Rustem, he engraved many of his drawings which influenced on further spreading of the early period of romanticism art in Lithuania.
