Summary / Abstract:

ENThe Graphic design department, named Engraving school, was established in Vilnius university in 1805. The teachers of this department obligeded to train the professional graphic designers for press and for teaching in secondary schools a drawing, calligraphy. The first teacher of this Engraving school was Isydor Weiss (1774. 04. 4 - about 1821). He explained the fundamentals of the copper plate engraving art and also created in classicism style. The Graphic design department was in its golden age in 1810-1818 when professor Joseph Saunders (1773-1845) worked here. He also taught the history of art, the english literature. Professor leant on principles of classicism and romanticism art: harmony, measure, simplicity, sincerity and naturalism. In 1819-1821 the graphic design teacher was Michal Podolinski (1783-1856). In 1822-1832 taught this branch of art Friederik Lehmann (1787 - known to 1835). In 1828-1832 worked with him Gottlieb Kisling (17901846). He taught the art of graphic design and the theory of fine arts. They also created, taught in the secondary schools. In 1821 was opened in Vilnius university the first in Lithuania studio of lithography. Until 1823 as teacher here was Wincenty Slawecki (1794 - known to 1844), in 1823-1826 Józef Hilarion Głowacki (1789. 01 - 1858.12. 21), 1829-1837 Maciej Pszybylski (1794. 02. 24 - 1867. 0..1). The art of lithography was developed by painters. Engraving school of Vilnius university began to train for the first time in Lithuania the professional graphic designers. They creative work predominated in the first half of the nineteenth century graphic art of Lithuania.
