ENAfter the re-establishment of independence, Lithuania has signed or acceded to many international treaties, either bilateral or multilateral. Being a small country and living through the period of post-communist transition, Lithuania attaches great importance to international treaties which play a significant role particularly in areas such as protection of human rights and promotion of development of the national economy. One may mention, for example, Lithuania's accession to the main international instruments on human rights . On 12 March 1991, Lithuania acceded to the two International Covenants on Human Rights and to the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of 1966 (accession effective from 20 February 1992); on 14 May 1993, Lithuania signed and on 27 April 1995 ratified the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (accession effective from 20 June 1995). Lithuania has also acceded to the International Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, etc. [Extract, p. 111-112].
