Summary / Abstract:

ENThe worldview and outlook of modern society is very different from that of the 19th and 20th centuries, which, as we have said, was the "golden age" of straw gardens. The ritual meaning of sodai has been forgotten in modern times. The rational mind of modern man is incapable of feeling the sacred ness and significance of the sodas. Weddings are rarely accompanied by traditional rites and rituals, except in the case of the occasional 'die-hard'folklore fans, but even then the straw garden is at best used only as a decorative element. Bridesmaids sometimes make a sodas for the bride and groom during the bachelorette party, either with the help of a sodas-maker, or on their own, sometimes with the participation of the bride-to-be. In some cases, the newlyweds may wish to decorate the wedding reception room with sodai. It is even possible to rent a straw garden for this purpose [...]. Wedding planners are also starting to offer sodai as a gift from parents to the bride and groom, or simply as an interior decoration for the hall. But it also happens that people read or hear about the meaning of a straw garden and want to buy a sodas "retroactively"', even if their wedding took place many years ago. [p. 7].
