EN"Devynioliktan amžiun įžengus" (At the dawn of the 19th century) is the third volum e of the serial publication "Senoji Lietuvos literatūra" (Old Lithuanian Literature), devoted to the early 19th-century literature. This new epoch, the literature of which entirely differs from that of old written language and where due to new historical context (incorporation of a large part of Lithuania into the Russian empire, processes of the formation and democratization of the Lithuanian nation) saw the changes in the cultural atm osphere and the notion of literature. On the other hand, there are a number of close links between the 19th-century literature and that of earlier centuries. The volume consists of two sections: articles and publications. In the article "Connections between national consciousness and paganist culture at the beginning of the 19th century" I. Skurdenienė reconstructs and from different angles discusses the myth of the pre-Christian Lithuania, featured in creations of many a 19th-century writer, viz. S. Daukantas, D. Poška, L. Rėza, S. Stanevičius, etc. A significant feature of their works, their great interest in national culture, mythology and language, which on its turn was propelled by Romanticism dominating Lithuania of that period, by the idealization of the past and search for national spirit peculiar to this movement is also distinquished by the author. A. Tereškinas' article "Jurgis Ambraziejus Pabrėža: By the sacred lovingness..." focuses the personality of J. A. Pabrėža, Lithuanian cultural worker, a Franciscan monk, according to the authors', stoic and ascetic, who worked on the turn of the 19th century as well as his point of view on man and spiritual wealth expressed in his poems and sermons.J. Lebionka's article "Precursors of the Romantic literature in Lithuania" presents pre-Romantic works and articles of the first two decades of the 19th century, written in Polish and published in Vilnius by literary workers L. Unicki, A. Mostowska, F. Szahin Sokol, T. Lityhski, O. Pietraszkiewicz and A. Górecki. Attention is directed to the combination of classical and romantic features in their novels and collections of poems, Lithuanian motifs of their works (glorification of the legendary past of Lithuania, the motif of ruins of Vilnius castle and others) as well as to the urge they rendered upon Lithuanian literary w orkers (D. Poška, etc.). A conclusion is draw n that the works of the said authors served as a basis for the early Romantic literature not only in Lithuania but also the whole Polish literature. They seem to have had obvious influence upon then emerged "Lithuanian school" of the Polish Romantisizm and first of all upon the creation of A. Mickiewicz and J. Slowacki. The object of J. Šlekys' article is the reaction of Russian literary workers to the 1830-1831 years' uprising in Poland and Lithuania. Giving detailed analysis of the works, press publications, correspondence on this subject of the dekabrists V. Zhukovsky, P. Viazemsky and others, J. Šlekys brings to the foreground the sympathy of some authors for the uprising and the connection of some of them with the imperial policy of the Tsar. A separate paragraph is devoted to A. Pushkin's mostly negative attitude to the uprising. With reference to the principles of textological analysis in her article "Manuscripts of S. Daukantas' historiograpical works" R. Bončkutė reconstructs the history of the said manuscripts. The specification of a more precise date of S. Daukantas' works, the identification of copyists, the attem pt to delineate which text elements should be ascribed to the language and which to the spelling, which should be considered language data and which mistakes rest on the complex method of manuscript analysis (referring to the scientific data of the history of the common language, of dialectology, history, literature, paleography). The article also attempts to define general problems of the analysis of S. Daukantas' manuscripts. The section of publications presents biographies of two German literary workers, Gottfried and Siegfried Ostermeyers (father and son), who resided in Prussian Lithuania and contributed much to the Lithuanian culture. The material embracing a foreword, German texts of the biographies, taken from the publication "Some scrappy notes on the Ostermeyers' family", their translations into Lithuanian was prepared by R. Šlaitaitė. [...].
