ENThe object of this book is to present Józef Ignacy Kraszewski as a Vilnius and Lithuanian historian. The main issue focus on the four-volumes work Vilnius from its beginning to 1750 (Vilnius 1840-1842). The author declared using a few hundred bibliographical units in this monograph, and the thesis demonstrate that except for contemporary monographs he also based on archival manuscripts (like the Vilnius Chapter’s protocols and municipal acts) and old prints which are unknown today. The first part of the thesis answers the question where had Kraszewski got the archival materials which allowed him to write Vilnius monograph from. It also broach the topic of his researches in libraries, communication with a publisher Adam Zawadzki, and Vilnius contemporary reviews. This part ends with a debrief of the Vilnius composition. The second part involve the search for works and authors quoted by Kraszewski. The verification allow further recognition of his history workshop. His most frequent methods of collecting, adaptation and interpreting materials has been also indicated here.
