ENOne of the most important project for Baltic countries is “Rail Baltica“, which is announced as priority project and financed by the European Union. It will connect North Sea - Baltic Sea corridor with the Western Europe and making the whole Europe much closer and more accessible. Railway is the most ecological, environmentally friendly and safe for passengers’ and cargos’ transportation. This project is the reason for the sustainable economic growth in Baltic countries, which leads to increasing GDP, higher trade competitiveness and investments’ attractiveness. Moreover, “Rail Baltica” project benefits the region by creating modern infrastructure and new work places. On the other hand, this is the most discussed and criticized project in Baltic region because it also has some negative effects for the countries. The costs of maintenance of new railway will be very high and after the end of the EU funding in 2020 all the big financial burden will fall on Baltic countries’ budget.
