Analysis of English and Lithuanian EU documents: average sentence length

LTInstitucinių dokumentų sintaksė yra problematiška. Viena opiausių problemų gali būti laikomi ilgi bei komplikuoti sakiniai. Ši institucinių tekstų ypatybė yra aptarta ne vieno mokslininko. Taip pat ES ir EK pateikė naujus reikalavimus vertėjams bei tekstų autoriams, tačiau iki šiol buvo neaišku, ar šų reikalavimų yra laikomąsi. Šis tyrimas buvo atliktas norint išsiaiškinti, ar minėtų reikalavimų yra laikomąsi bei nustatyti jų galimą poveikį dokumentams. Pagrindinis šio tyrimo tikslas buvo nustatyti ES dokumentų anglų bei lietuvių kalba vidutinį sakinio ilgį ir išskirti dabartines dokumentų rašymo tendencijas. Atlikus tyrimą buvo pastebėta, jog ES dokumentai nustatytų reikalavimų neatitinka, o vidutinis sakinio ilgis priklauso nuo dokumento tipo.

ENSyntax of institutional documents is known to be problematic. One of the most problematic syntactic features in institutional documents might be considered to be wordy sentences. This problem has been discussed by many researchers in the field. Additionally, the European Union and the European Commission have posed new requirements, which are reader/translator friendly, yet, until now, it has not been clear if those requirements are being met. In order to find out whether the requirements are met and to analyse their impact on the documents, this study was conducted. The main goal of this study was to find out the average sentence length in Lithuanian and English EU documents and to point out the present tendencies of EU document drafting. The study revealed that the requirements were not being met and that different types of documents had influence on the length of sentences.
