ENThe article analyses the sustainability issues by comparative analysis of the specific factors of the banking sectors in Lithuania and Hungary. The traditional understanding of sustainable development is mostly concentrated in environmental protection issues. The article focuses on the role of banks in sustainable development, by analysis of the recent trends in e-banking, innovative banking practices, which provide the means for sustainable development of other businesses. The article indicates and evaluates factors of financial and banking systems of the two countries, compares internet banking, mobile banking, payment cards areas, and presents the characteristic properties, expectations, problems and ability of these systems to create opportunities for sustainable business in Lithuania and Hungary. The introduced evaluation method suggests measurement of penetration of e-banking systems by applying integrative sustainability index instead of exclusively financial or statistical ratios.
