Woven towels of Western Ukraine and Lithuania: techniques, décor, functions
ENTraditional Western Ukrainian and Lithuanian woven towels are valuable asset of tangible and intangible culture of both nations. They are the most expressive as décor items for interior, ceremonial and household functions. The study of towels is conducted on two complementary levels - international (Ukrainian and Lithuanian context) and interdisciplinary (technological and artistic features). The short information about the study of Ukrainian region weaving was provided by S. Sydorovych. O. Nykorak has made the most complete analysis of the local features of manufacturing and authentic towels decor of different Western Ukrainian historical and ethnographic regions. Towels functions in traditional culture were thoroughly investigated by O. Nykorak and L. Andrushko. A combination of woven ornaments with embroidery was researched by R. Zakharchuk-Chuhai, and lace by O. Kozakevych. The paper's aim is to analyze woven techniques, artistic and stylistic parameters of woven towels; to set up general and unique features of their decor: to identify the diversity of the function.
