Summary / Abstract:

ENThe author reviews Polish source editing for the Jagiellonian period, starting from the 19th century. It was during this time that the fundamental directions for editions were established, which were developed in the following years. The major projects discussed include: Acta capitulorum, Acta Historica, Acta Tomiciana, Akta grodzkie i ziemskie, Codex epistolaris XV w., Corpus iuris Polonici, Monumenta medii aevi historica, Monumenta Poloniae Vaticana, Starodawne Prawa Polskiego Pomniki, Scriptores Rerum Polonicarum, Długosz’s works, diplomatic codes, and the summaries of the Metryka Koronnej, among others. Many of these, as well as new projects, were interrupted by both world wars. Poland lost 90% of its archival and library resources. After 1945, source editions for the northern territories of Poland, i.e., the Royal and Ducal Prussia (Akta stanów Prus Królewskich), were initiated. Some old projects were continued, such as Concilia Poloniae, regional diplomatic codes, and the re-edition of Jan Długosz’s Chronicle. The ongoing series of Lustracje dóbr królewskich XVI–XVIII wieku, started in the 1950s, proved successful. However, in the 1970s, a crisis in editing arose due to the reduction of institutional support for major projects and a lack of specialized staff. Many projects failed, such as the editions of international treaties or the continuation of the Tomiciana. In recent years, editing has been revived, partly due to grant funding. The editing of Jan Dantyszek’s correspondence has begun, work on the Vatican documents has resumed, and the re-edition of the Polish-Lithuanian union acts has been undertaken. A series of publications titled Studia Jagellonica. Fontes. has been planned. Digital editions are emerging. In conclusion, the author proposes an inventory of archival and library sources for the Jagiellonian period and calls for the inclusion of digital humanities in history study programs.
