1764 metų Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės generalinės konfederacijos klausimu

LTVienas svarbių LDK politinės istorijos aspektų yra Lenkijos ir Lietuvos bajorų institucinis darinys - konfederacijos, jų tipai, teisinė raida, vieta parlamentarizme. XVIII a. konfederacijų tyrimai svarbūs dėl dviejų priežasčių: pirma, jos buvo viena pagrindinių politinio veikimo formų Respublikoje; antra, istoriografijoje ryškus kontroversiškas jų vertinimas (viena, jos yra laikomos anarchijos instrumentu, pražudžiusiu valstybę, kita vertus, priemone, stabilizavusia politinius santykius). Konfederacija yra ne vien politinės istorijos elementas, bet ir šeiminės istorijos dalis, bajorų parlamentarizmo reiškinys, viena atstovaujamosios valdžios formų. Teisinis konfederacijos struktūros apibūdinimas įgalina aiškiau suprasti valstybės sandarą, ypač kalbant apie ypatingą jos būseną - bekaralmečius. Nagrinėjant konfederacijas, atskleidžiamas istorinėje literatūroje pripažintas LDK teisės savarankiškumas. Nepaisant gausios lenkų istoriografijos konfederacijų tema, joje, išskyrus Andrzejaus Rachubos ir Woicecho Staneko darbus, beveik neaptariamos atskiros LDK konfederacijos. Plačią istoriografiją turi Radomo, Baro, Targovicos konfederacijos, tuo tarpu mažai tyrinėti XVIII a. I pusės tokie dariniai. Prie pastarųjų priskirtume LDK generalinę konfederaciją Vilniuje paskutiniu valstybės tarpuvaldžiu (1763-1764 m.). Šis bekaralmetis, pagal J. Jezierskio pateiktą klasifikaciją, buvo natūralus, t. y. laikotarpis mirus valdovui [p. 395].

ENIn the 18th century one of the main forms of political activity in the Republic was confederation. However, so far neither separate confederations nor the General Confederation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the last interregnum have been investigated. The confederation in question reflected the political struggle between two main groups, the “Family” and the “Patriots”. It was organized on April 16, 1764 by the Bishop of Vilnius Ignacy Massalski with the military and political assistance of Russia in opposition to the voivode of Vilnius Karol Stanislaw Radvila, the most prominent representative of the “Patriots”. Nearly all the voivode districts of the Grand Duchy were represented by the nobles at the confederation. There were two distinct fields in the activity of the confederation - military and judicial. Confederate courts of law, having functioned until December, 1764, in Vilnius, Grodno and Brest, investigated over 400 cases (many of them financial) against Radvila and his supporters. In June and July the confederates organized the last trials of the “Patriots”. Radvila lost all his residences in Byelorussia and had to emigrate to Moldova. All his manors in Poland and Lithuania were confiscated, too, and given over to his creditors.The decisive role in the last fights of the interregnum was played by regular Russian troops. The military victory of the “Family” was the last stage in their protege Stanisław Poniatowski’s coming to the throne. Though it was a separate confederation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Vilnius confederation of 1764 was not a genuine state representation of the Duchy because it was organized in the interests of the Family and the Russian Empire. It was the last pre-election confederation of the Republic. In general, speaking about the role of Lithuanian confederations in the parlamentarianism of the eighteenth-century Republic and in the process of state disintegration, critical attention must be paid to each particular confederation, its type and motivation.
