ENOne basic catechetical principle is the presentation of an authentic understanding of Church. In the apostolic exhortation Catechesi Tradendae John Paul II has again stressed the point about revealing the mystery of Church (CT, 29). Catholic teaching frequently presents Church as an institution, God's People or Christ's mystical body. Vatican II new developed aspects to the biblical understanding of Church. One such aspect is the Church as Sacrament in the World. The aim of this article is to examine this concept by literary analysis and meta-analysis. Many renowned catholic theologians examined this concept including such names as M. Schmaus, B. Haring, L. Ott, K. Rahner, E. Schillebeeckx, E. Dūles. This eclesiological understanding was already present seminally in the writings of the early Church Fathers but it was only clearly brought into focus in recent times. The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church states that the Church, by her relationship with Christ, is a kind of sacrament or sign of intimate union with God, and of the unity of ail mankind (Lumen Gentium, 1). The term „sacrament“ is here applied to the Church by analogy with the seven sacraments properly so called, which are particular actions of Christ in and through the Church. The Church itself is a sort of „general sacrament", since, as the Constitution here explains, it is a „sign and instrument" of the grace which unites men supematurally to God and to one another. This theme of Church as sacrament however is found repeatedly in other documents of Vatican II. Traditionally sacrament is a visible sign of invisible grace. Jesus Christ Himself is the primary sacrament and revelation of God's grace. Then follows the Church that He instituted. This becomes the sign and instrument for humanity of union with God.
