Title:
O rzekomym chrzcie prawosławnym Jagiełły (polemika z hipotezą Jana Tęgowskiego)
Alternative Title:
On the alleged Orthodox baptism of Jogaila (polemic with Jan Tęgowski’s hypothesis)
In the Journal:
Rocznik Lituanistyczny, 2023, 9, p. 19-
Summary / Abstract:

ENAft er analysing the sources, the author rejected the cautious hypothesis of Tadeusz Wasilewski, who claimed that, by not receiving Orthodox baptism, Jogaila became an advanced stage catechumen of the Orthodox Church (having assumed the name of Yakov). He also took a similar position about Jan Tęgowski’s hypothesis (which is a renewed and signifi cantly expanded earlier opinion of Nikolay Karamzin, Teodor Narbutt, Mikhail Smirnov, and Kazimierz Stadnicki), according to whom Jogaila, along with the other pagan Gediminas, received Orthodox baptism in 1384. Th e conclusion of the article is unequivocal: the future husband of Jadwiga (Hedvig) of Anjou received Catholic baptism in Krakow in 1386 as a pagan, and before that, he was not an advanced stage catechumen of the Orthodox Church. Keywords: Jogaila, baptism, Orthodox Church, Lithuania, Dmitry Donskoy.
