Archaeological investigation of the Kluonaliai ancient agricultural fields
Summary / Abstract:

ENIn 2004 the archaeological investigation of the Kluonaliai ancient agricultural fields was performed. During that in different sections of the field 18 trenches were defined (873.5 m2). During the investigation 16 profile sections of the field edges were made. Edges were made of earth and stones. Besides that, earlier stratigraphic structures were discovered: one edge and three piles. In the trenches various finds were collected: wheel-made potshards, one hand-made potshard, nails etc. Charred wood particles were collected for radiocarbon tests. Results ofthe tests will help to establish a more precise dating of these ancient fields. At present the destroyed structural patterns imply that these are the so called strip fields, which started to form in Western Lithuania after the Wloka Agrarian Reform. Their formation intensified after the abolition of serfdom. So it is assumed that the later stratigraphic structures marking the ancient fields (stone edges) apply to that period. The stone edges and piles found underneath should be attributed to a considerably earlier period, but without the radiocarbon test their dating is complicated.
