ENDuring the archaeological investigations of the site at the Maironio Str. 10 (the territory of the St. Francis and St. Bernard Church and Convent) an area of 349 m2 was investigated. Fragments of earlier brick structures (of the 16th-17th century) built prior to the officina were discovered. Besides that, fragments of the defensive walls of the city orientated W-E and SE were found. On the comer there was a defensive tower orientated NE-SW. Its purpose was to defend the eastern side of the former Bernadine’s Gates. Fragments of the western, eastern, northern and southern corners of the tower were excavated. The external dimensions of the rectangular tower were about 6.5 x 8.8 m. The foundation pits excavated in the churchyard territory contained a large number of human bones (not less than of 177 individuals) coming from destroyed graves of the 16th-17th century. The cultural layer was 1.6-4 m thick. It dated to the first half of the 16th-19th century. During the investigations 244 archaeological finds datable to the second half of the 16th-19th century were collected.
