ENIn 2004 the archaeological survey of the Kalnelis 2nd hill-fort foot settlement and its vicinity was performed. 2 additional test pits were excavated at the Ramybės Street 3. The total area investigated covered 101.7 m2 (test pits and sector No. 1 were excavated). Undisturbed cultural layers were found in the test pits No. 1, 7, 14, 16, 26-30. During the investigations the following archaeological finds were collected: pieces of slag, hand-made rusticated pottery, wheel-made early and 16th-17th century potteiy with trimmed rims, an iron spur with a multi-angled spike, a crookline pin, a flat fibula (a pin head (?)) shaped as eight-foliate clover, an awl (an arrowhead (?)), a hook - clothing detail, a bronze ring, a fragment of a rectangular whetstone, a fragment of a grey slate whetstone. Sectors investigated in 2004 are datable to 3 periods: the Middle Iron Age (the 5th-10th century), the Late Iron Age (the 11th-13th century) and the 16th-17th century. The archaeological surveys performed in 2004 once more have proved that this site used to host the Semigallian Sidabre Castle mentioned in 1289-1290.
