Field surveys and evaluations in South and East Lithuania
Summary / Abstract:

ENIn 2006 and earlier years the author has conducted field surveys and evaluations in East and South Lithuania. During these investigations, the territory of the settlement at the foot of Akvieriškė hill fort (Švenčionys Dist.) was significantly corrected by expanding it to the N and 9 new archaeological sites were discovered: 7 ancient settlement, 1 former village site with the remains of an earlier ancient settlement site, and 1 hill fort. The following ancient settlement were identified: Lapainia 2 (Kaišiadorys Dist.), which dates to the Final Palaeolithic – Mesolithic period, Papiškės and Pasieniai (both in Vilnius Dist.), which date to the Stone and Iron Ages, Pervieniškės (Žemaitiškė) 6, which dates to the Middle Neolithic, and Kirdeikiškė (both in Švenčionys Dist.), which dates to the Final Palaeolithic – early Neolithic. Dabinta village site (Kaišiadorys Dist.) is on the second terrace above the floodplain on the bank of the Nemunas. Sherds of thrown – partially thrown vessels and osteological finds were discovered in especially large quantities during the survey and the remains of destroyed stoves were located. The discovered finds date to the 15th–19th centuries. Finds from earlier eras were also discovered in this territory: a fragment of a socketed spearhead ascribable to the 1st millennium and various flint finds dating to the Stone Age (blades, flakes, cores, figurine, etc). The Vedėriniai hill fort (Ignalina Dist.) is on a small separate hill with slopes 5–7 m in height. The flat summit is a rounded trapezoid, 24–25 m long in a N–S direction, about 20–22 m wide at the S end, and 25 m wide at the N end. Ramparts have been created at the summit’s ends: the N rampart is about 25–26 m long, 7 m wide, and up to 2 m high; the S rampart is difficult to define, is crescent shaped, about 20 m long, 2–3 m wide, and up to 0.5 m high. At the bottom part of the hill’s W slope, a terrace up to 2 m wide is discernable and at the very foot, a slight depression, which is perhaps the remains of the former defensive ditch, although it could have also been formed by later ploughing. The hill fort site has been significantly disturbed by ploughing. Stroked pottery pot sherds were discovered at the hill fort. These date to the 2nd half of the 1st millennium BC – mid-1st millennium AD. Many of these newly found archaeological sites were discovered and their territories established by using the least destructive archaeological investigations possible and with the help of data provided by closely related sciences (paleogeography, geomorphology, botany, and soil testing).
