ENAt the order of Kelprojektas, UAB, a field evaluation was conducted in 2006 of the Ramygala E bypass (Panevėžys Dist.). 16 test pits (a total area of 27 m2) were excavated during it. In test pit 3 part of a refuse pit, 80 x 95 cm in size with an observed depth of about 1.4 m, was discovered and excavated. It continued to the N and W of the test pit. At a pit depth of about 1.35–1.40 m from the ground’s surface, a tree was felt but it could not be moved and the excavation went no deeper. The pit, having filled with water, was preserved and left for a larger scale excavation. In test pit 4, which was 10.50 m to the SE of test pit 3, several sherds of hand built pottery were found that had a coarsely ground stone admixture in the clay mass. On the basis of the pottery, the discovered cultural layer, which is about 30–40 cm thick, has been preliminarily dated to the late 1st millennium – 1st half of the 2nd millennium. An excavation must be made in an area about 300 m2 in size to the S of the channelled River Upytė prior to the construction of the road.
