LT2006 m. liepos–rugpjūčio mėnesiais pagal AB „Lietuvos dujos“ Vilniaus filialo ir LAD pasirašytą sutartį vykdyti magistralinio dujotiekio atšakos į Švenčionėlius (iš viso apie 10 km ilgio atkarpa Švenčionių r.) žvalgomieji archeologiniai tyrinėjimai. Jų metu surinkta informacija apie visas trasos juostoje (maždaug 200 m pločio ruožas) bei greta jos esančias kultūros vertybes (ne tik archeologinius objektus), kurios lokalizuotos ir įvertintos atliekant paviršinį žvalgymą, kasant žvalgomuosius šurfus, naudojant metalo detektorių. Dujotiekio atšaka į Švenčionėlius tiesta panaudojant buvusio siaurojo geležinkelio Švenčionys–Utena sankasą, kurios atskiros atkarpos šiuo metu eksploatuojamos kaip vietinės reikšmės keliai. Kadangi ši teritorija buvo labai apardyta statant minėtą sankasą (čia nuardyti visi paviršiniai žemės sluoksniai), teko žvalgyti kur kas platesnę teritoriją [p. 463].
ENIn 2006 an evaluation was made of the gas main branch to Švenčionėliai (a segment of about 10 km in Švenčionys Dist.). During it information was collected about all the archaeologically valuable sites in and alongside the route. They were delimited and evaluated by conducting a survey and excavating exploratory test pits. The gas main branch to Švenčionėliai was laid using the old narrow railway bed. Because this territory was significantly disturbed during the construction of the aforementioned bed (all the surface layers having been torn up); it was therefore necessary to survey a markedly wider territory. At the beginning of the evaluation, the reconstruction of the territory’s original landscape was made, which showed that the gas main route runs next to and cuts through several old flowing lake sites, which, once they became filled with peat, formed wide river valleys. After establishing potential sites, where people could have lived in prehistoric and historic times, the evaluation of these sites was made. During the survey of the gas main route itself, no unknown sites of archaeological or other cultural value were found. But several new culturally valuable sites were found in the vicinity of the gas main route: Drūstėnai old village site (18th–19th century), Drustėnai ancient settlement (isolated flint finds, a small polished flint axe, and chips from stone axe blades were discovered), and Varakaliai old cemetery II. In addition, the Drustėnai and Burbos (Laimiškė) old cemeteries were more precisely evaluated and delimited. During the evaluation of the gas main route in the town of Švenčionėliai (the territory to the E of the railway) no archaeologically valuable cultural layers or finds were discovered.
