Field evaluation at Žemaitijos St. 13/10
Summary / Abstract:

LT2006 m. vykdyti archeologiniai žvalgymai Vilniuje, Žemaitijos g. 13/10, naujo gyvenamojo namo ,,Mikalojaus žiedas“ statybos vietoje. Naujasis pastatas iškils vietoj nugriauto PRI pastato (statyto XX a. 7–8 dešimtmečiais). Archeologinių žvalgymų tikslas – nustatyti, ar griaunamo pastato vietoje dar yra išlikusių nesuardyto kultūrinio sluoksnio horizontų. Žvalgyta statybinio laužo ir grunto išvežimo darbų metu [p. 407].

ENIn 2006 an evaluation was conducted in Vilnius at Žemaitijos St. 13/10, the construction site for a residential home. The construction of the future flats began in place of the demolished PRI building, which had been built in place of buildings demolished in 1944 (that had been built and reconstructed in the 19th – early 20th century). A 4 x 6 m area with an undisturbed cultural layer that was 1.9–2.7 m thick was discovered in the S part of the small inner courtyard. Its top horizons date to the 18th–19th century while 16th–17th century finds were discovered in the bottom horizons. In excavating the trench in the inner courtyard at Šiaulių St. 8, fragments of two parallel foundations were found. These are probably the remains of a former mid-19th century building with a basement. On the W edge of Šiaulių St. were discovered the remains of an old structure (pre-1944): the foundation of an exterior basement wall of a building (with bay windows) that stood near the street and fragments of the demolished interior walls. The remains of earlier (18th–19th century) structures were discovered near Žemaitijos St. (on the NW corner of the lot) and near the NW corner of the building at Šiaulių St. 8. No valuable finds were discovered in the vicinity of the walls. The cultural layer’s early horizons were destroyed during construction work in the 19th–20th century.
