Excavations at Santakos St. 14
Summary / Abstract:

ENTrenches were excavated on the lot at Santakos St. 14 at the site of a channel, which was filled during flooding and located between a former island at the confluence of the Nemunas and the Neris and the bank at the confluence. The channel bottom prior to the beginning of the development of Kaunas Old Town cultural layers was at a height of Habs. 18.50–19.65 m. A series of cultural layers 4.4–6.55 m thick were found in trenches 1–4. Layers 4.3–4.8 m thick and deposited by flooding had formed at the sites of trenches 5–6 until they reached a height of Habs. 23.17–23.58 m in the 17th century. A layer of silt, which was 1.8–2 m thick and at a height of Habs. 20.89–22.97 m, had formed on the channel bottom closer to the former bank and in the E part of trenches 1–2. The cultural layers at the sites of trenches 3–4 had formed on the gravel already located on the channel bottom. The first cultural layer consists of a fill layer of rubbish, which is up to 2.6 m thick. Based on the archaeological finds that were discovered, the rubbish began to be put in the channel’s waters in the 2nd half of the 15th century and the layer finished forming in the last quarter of the 16th century. The finds discovered in it: pottery, stove tiles, and household ceramics, comprise a united complex of 15th–16th century finds that are repetitive in their composition. They found their way into the cultural layer from one place, probably from the grounds of the Bernardine monastery. A large quantity of leather artefacts was collected for the first time in Kaunas Old Town in the layer of rubbish. Based on the conclusions of Dr. A. Puškorius who studied the leather artefacts, this find complex is unique not only in its quantity but also its integrity, the majority of the finds being possible to date to 1510–1550. In trenches 1–2 were found the remains of a fence built using split pine logs set vertically in the ground and pieces of worked wood. According to the dendrochronological tests that were performed, the pine trees were cut in the autumn of 1521 – spring of 1522. The excavations conducted in the lot at Santakos St. 14 provided new data not only about the Kaunas’ material culture and the formation of the series of cultural layers at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris but also about the original relief in the W part of the city.
