Papilio įtvirtinta dvarvietė

LT2006 m. archeologinių tyrimų metu Papilio įtvirtintoje dvarvietėje buvo ištirta apie 70 m2 : plotas 1 (5 x 5 m) kastas griovio PR pusėje, plotas 2 (5 x 8 m) – kalvelėje, plotas 3 (1 x 8,5 m) – PV šlaite [p. 223].

ENIn 2006 a total area of 70 m2 was excavated in the territory of the Papilys fortified manor site (Biržai Dist.). An earlier excavation of the manor site was conducted in 1957 (headed by local teacher I. Radzevičienė), from which no report survives but the finds are preserved at the RKM. According to information from historical sources, in the mid-16th century a castle existed at Papilys. Jonušas Radvila was born at Papilys manor in 1612. The foundation of a building, which stood at a manor site that was surrounded by a ditch, and many stove tile sherds from demolished stoves were found during excavations in 2006. A stove tile medallion with the date 1591 was also found as well as other stove tiles and finds dating to the late 16th – early 17th century. This date confirms the knowledge from historical sources that Kristupas ‘Perkūnas’ Radvila erected a new fortified manor at Papilys at that time.
