ENAgriculture in Lithuania performs a significant social, ethno-cultural and environmental function. In the Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Development in Lithuania, the dairy sector has been acknowledged as a priority branch of agriculture (Figure 1). The transition from central planned economy to market economy has been very complicated and hard. A very high decrease in animal production has been recorded. One of the key goals following the integration of Lithuanian agriculture into the EU common market is the improvement of competitiveness (Figure 2).
