Summary / Abstract:

LT2022 m. Vilniuje, teritorijoje tarp V. Mykolaičio-Putino ir K. Kalinausko gatvių, pratęsti 2021 m. pradėti Vilniaus evangelikų senųjų kapinių komplekso (UK 12559) teritorijos tvarkymo ir tvarkybos darbų projekto įgyvendinimo darbai [p. 563].

ENThe 2022 field survey (1700 m2) and excavation (42 various-sized areas totalling 479.91 m2) in the area between V. Mykolaičio-Putino and K. Kalinausko Streets in Vilnius identified an up to 0.4-2.4 m thick, 19th-20th-century cultural layer and a burial horizon at a depth of 1.2-2.4 m from the grounds present-day surface and yielded isolated 16th-20th-century finds, which probably came with the fill soil, as well as a total of 41 human remains, mainly of Vilnius residents, except for 5 individuals buried in a single pit. Due to the burial circumstances and the discovered uniform buttons, these individuals should be associated with the Grande Armee’s Second Artillery Regiment. All of the remains in this area were buried during the 19th - mid-20th century. The investigation also revealed cemetery structures destroyed during the Soviet period: part of the fence and the foundations of the almshouse or hospital and the SE chapel. Clear signs of the cemetery’s destruction were identified in its N part. In building the trade union hall, the earthwork destroyed the aforementioned fence and disturbed some burials. Interesting evidence of the disturbance of the cemetery’s N part includes a badly damaged metal coffin containing an Imperial Russian naval officers gilt sword.
