Investigation of Skausmo (Pain) Hill in Veiveriai
Summary / Abstract:

LTLGGRTC užsakymu 2022 m. Veiverių (Prienų r., Veiverių sen.) Lietuvos partizanų užkasimo vietoje, vadinamoje Skausmo kalneliu (UK 33545), buvo atliekami žvalgomieji tyrimai, siekiant atlikti kultūros paveldo objekto patikrą, palaikų paiešką, identifikavimą ir palaidojimą. Šio kultūros paveldo objekto tyrimų būtinybę skatina prieštaringi archyviniai istoriniai duomenys, žodinės informacijos faktai, netiksli ir klaidinga kultūros vertybių registro apraše skelbiama informacija [p. 536].

EN82 partisans were reportedly buried on Skausmo Hill in Veiveriai (Prienai District, Central Lithuania). Some had purportedly been buried there during 1944-1953 by NKVD agents or destruction battalion members after the defilement of their remains in the towns centre. The burial site was identified on the basis of oral information from people who had not participated in their burial. 29 (of the 82) remains had been exhumed from other known death and burial sites in the vicinity of Veiveriai and reburied on Skausmo Hill during 19881990. The boreholes from the 2022 archaeological investigation (5 trenches totalling 70 m2 and 94 boreholes in 2 lines) located none of the pits or military trenches mentioned by witnesses, nor did the trenches at the site of georadar anomalies yield anything. It was determined that the hill is natural. No archaeologically valuable layers, structures, finds, human remains, or even individual bones were discovered. It is likely that there were no military trenches at this site or that the witnesses indicated the wrong places.
