Zygmunt Gloger. Starożytnik czy archeolog?

ENThe article asks the following question: were Zygmunt Gloger’s archaeological examinations only manifestations of his passions as a collector and antiquarian, or should they be classified as serious academic work? In order to address this question, the article shows the status and the role of Gloger in Polish and European archaeological circles at the turn of the 19th century, his professional credentials, including his familiarity with the methods of field survey, both non-invasive and excavating, the methods of data interpretation, and his research interests. All these aspects considered, the article argues that Gloger was a professional archeologist, and his research can be considered as precursory both for the archaeology of distant past and the archeology of the lands of north-eastern Poland, Lithuania and Belarus.
