ENThe 2022 field evaluation in Ukmergė Old Town: Bažnyčios St. 18 (Test Pit 1), Bugenių St. 6 (Test Pit 4), Kalkių St. 7 (Test Pit 7), Kalkių St. 10 (Test Pits 5, 6), Klaipėdos St. 17 (Test Pits 17-19) Paupio St. 31 (Test Pits 12, 13), and Paupio St. 37 (Test Pit 14) revealed a 0.6-2 m thick, mixed / fill cultural layer from the 20th-21st centuries. In Test Pits 6, 7, and 12-14 on Darbininkų Street, at a depth of 50-55 cm from the surface and underthe 20th-century gravel bed lay fragments of early 20th-century stone paving, under which lay a 40-80 cm thick, second half of the 19th-century layer of construction rubble with contemporaneous finds. The rubble had been dumped on the wet peat forming on the bank of the Vilkmergėlė. The 18th-19th-century potsherds and chopped animal bones discovered in this peat show that riverbank had been used as a tip by the town’s inhabitants in the nearby homes. Test Pit 17 on the NE side of the intersection of Darbininkų and Vytauto Streets yielded stone paving fragments from two periods. The paving at a depth of 90 cm from the surface was probably laid after the construction of the St Petersburg - Warsaw highway began in the first half of the 19th century. The fill layer, up to 1.3 m thick, that lay beneath it and contained isolated 17th-century potsherds is also connected with this period.Test Pit 8 at Kalkių St. 7 revealed a 1.1 m thick, 17th-19th-century cultural layer at a former production waste tip site on the grounds of the former Ukmergė structural ceramics and household pottery production facility. The layers, which were stratigraphically chaotic, yielded many fragments of S-style roof tiles, pieces of two whetstones, sherds of earthenware vessels, and pieces of other structural ceramic artefacts with no clear purpose. Test Pits 9-11, 15, and 16 at Kranto St. 5 and 7 revealed a 0.6-1.8 m thick fill layer created on the Vilkmergėlė streambank in the 19th century in planning the route of the new Kranto Street and the urban development beside it, Test Pits 2 and 3 at Vilniaus St. 25 a 20-35 cm thick layer of black soil containing charcoal but no finds.
