ENIn 2022, excavation and field survey were carried out at the grounds of the Sapiegos Residence, the Trinitarian monastery, and the hospital complex in the Vilnius borough of Antakalnis. A total of 8 trenches with a total area of 337.75 m2 were excavated, and a further 578.4 m2 area was surveyed. Excavations in the palace courtyard revealed an archaeological layer with finds, features, and structures, which measured 0.05-1 m in thickness and was dated to the 16th-19th centuries. A 16th-18th-century layer, which was 5-30 cm thick, was recorded at a depth of 1-2.8 m in Trenches 2, 4, 5 and 7. In contrast, in Trenches 1, 3, 6 and 8, the archaeological layer was heavily disturbed or not preserved at all. The preserved archaeological layer was not intense, yielding a small number of finds. In Trenches 2, 5 and 7, at a depth of 2.15-2.85 m, a layer of blackish sand approx. 2-20 cm thick was recorded, which might date to 1000 BC-100 AD. This layer was disturbed at some point between the 16th and 18th centuries. Two sherds of hand-thrown pottery were found in this layer in Trench 5, and 17 hand-thrown brushed pottery sherds were found in the fill of a feature in Trench 7. During the field survey, a late-19th- to early-20th-century sump (Structure 5) and a part of an unidentified structure (Structure 6) were found in Area 3. Four structures were found at the site of the central heating route (N part of the area): 1) a fragment of a 19th-century fence extending S-N from the palace, towards the building at 15 L. Sapiegos St.; 2) a fragment of a late-19th- to 20th-сеnturу sump; 3) an 18th-century gateway with a guardhouse (Fig. 6); and 4) a continuation of the same sump (Structure 2 and Structure 5).
