Summary / Abstract:

LT2022 m.

ENIn 2022, exploratory excavation was carried out in two location at the site of the Prienai Manor (central Lithuania, Prienai district). A total of 14 test pits (1-1.5 m2 each) were excavated on Kranto, Pilies and Sodų Streets (14.5 m2 total). An archaeologically valuable layer dated to the 17th-18th centuries was found in the central and S parts of Pilies St. (test pits 6-9), at a depth of approximately 20-45 cm, and on Sodų Street (test pits 12-13), at a depth of approximately 0.8-1.4 m. The layer was not very pronounced, containing only a few sherds of household pottery dating to the 16th-18th centuries (some of it was Kielce pottery) and panel stove tile fragments. Only 19th-21st-century layers were recorded in the remaining parts of the above-mentioned streets and on the S edge of Kranto St., which reached sterile soil and contained isolated finds from the 16th-18th centuries. At the land plot of 7A Žemaitės St., an area of 4.5 m2 was investigated. The upper layers, 70-75 cm deep, were found to have been disturbed by 20th-century road construction and surface levelling works. An archaeologically valuable 16th- and 17th-century layer was identified underneath. It contained fragments of household pottery dating to the same period: bowl- and pot-shaped stove tiles and a Nuremberg counting token.
