Visginių pilkapynas

LT2022 m. rugsėjo 25 - spalio 4 d. Visginių senkapio (UK 2525) teritorijoje (Telšių r., Upynos sen.) atlikti žvalgomieji tyrimai ir žvalgymai. Tyrimai skirti vertingųjų savybių pobūdžiui patikslinti, senkapio datavimui nustatyti, teritorijos riboms patikslinti [p. 108].

ENIn 2022, a field survey and exploratory excavation were carried out in the territory of Visginai barrow cemetery (UK 2525) (western Lithuania, Telšiai district). During a visual survey of the protected area and the approachesto its SE side, five locations of possible barrow mounds were identified. The total surveyed area was 8,500 m2. The exploratory excavation comprised nine trenches measuring 5 X 2 m. Including trench extensions, the total excavation area was 92.5 m2. Trenches 7 and 8 contained three inhumations, which were dated to the 1st-2nd centuries on the basis of the grave goods. The deceased were buried in an extended supine position. Stones were found in Graves 1 and 2 at the sides of the remains. In Grave 1, the following grave goods were found: a spearhead, a sickle, a socketed axe, and sherds of hand-thrown pottery. In Grave 2, the following items were found: a neck-ring with trumpet-shaped terminals, an eye brooch, and an iron awl. The deceased were buried with their heads to the W-NW (276-302°). Fragments of a stone circle characteristic of the base of barrow mounds were found in Trench 9. The 30-45-cm-thick archaeological layer recorded in Trenches 7-9 is attributable to the 1st-4th centuries. According to the research data, it has been established that the site is not an ancient cemetery but a barrow cemetery, the protected area of which should be enlarged.
