LT2007 m. marijampolės savivaldybės užsakymu vykdyti meškučių senovės gyvenvietės (Marijampolės miestas) archeologiniai tyrinėjimai. Ši gyvenvietė surasta 2006 m. žvalgomųjų archeologinių tyrinėjimų metu (žr. ATL 2006 metais, V., 2007, p. 83–84). Kr., o viršutinis – I tūkst. pirmąja puse. Kiti radiniai: moneta, švininės kulkos, žiesta keramika liudija tam tikrą žmonių veiklą XVII-XIX a. Visose perkasose surasta ir XX a. datuojamų radinių. Archeologiniai tyrinėjimai bus tęsiami 2008 m. ENAt the order of Marijampolė municipality, an excavation was conducted in 2007 at Meškučiai old settlement (the city of Marijampolė). This settlement was discovered during a 2006 field evaluation. At about 90 m to the W of the river Šešupė and about 15 m to the W of a small ditch and village road, the excavation was conducted in a field, which is in the first terrace above the floodplain and in the first investigation zone established in 2006. Trenches (a total area of 2 9.2 m2) were excavated in 2007. In part of the excavated trenches, the cultural layer from the old settlement has been disturbed by ploughing and the digging of a drainage ditch. In parts of the less disturbed trenches a cultural layer from two periods can be distinguished. The lower cultural layer, which is about 10–40 cm thick, dates to the 2nd millennium BC. 10 postholes, hand built pottery with smooth surfaces, and flint flakes and blades were discovered. The upper cultural layer, which is about 20–60 cm thick, dates to the first half of the 1st millennium. A partially destroyed cooking pit, stone paving, and 2 piles of stones were discovered in it. Hand built pottery with rough and smooth surfaces, a blue glass bead, a clay spindle, a narrow bronze band bracelet, and an iron awl were also found. 17th–20th century finds: A John II Casimir groat, cast lead bullets, thrown pottery, a ring with a gemstone, nails, glass, etc. were also discovered in the top soil and the upper cultural layer. A former stream bed was also found during the excavation. The excavation of meškučiai old settlement will continue in 2008.
