LT2022 m.
ENArchaeological excavations were carried out in 2022 at 5 land plots within the territory of the ancient settlement of Šventoji (western Lithuania, Palanga). Two adjacent plots at 16 Audronašų St. and 72 Pylimo St. are located in the W part of the territory of the ancient settlement of Šventoji III, on the left bank of the Šventoji River. Exploratory excavations comprised several test pits of the following dimensions: 2 x 1; 2 x 2; and 3 x 2 m. A total area of 16 m2 was excavated at the 0.11 ha land plot of Audronašų St. 16, and a 58 m2 area was excavated at the 0.37 ha land plot of 72 Pylimo St. In addition, 11 boreholes were drilled. All the test pits and boreholes demonstrated stratigraphy typical of the ancient Šventoji lagoon lake. The investigation showed that the submarine slope of the lake was relatively steep in this area, with a 1.8 m drop in elevation over an 18 m section. A total of 47 archaeological finds associated with fishing activities in the lake were recovered during the excavation. The majority of finds were wooden (24): stakes; pine laths; and a few artefacts, including a relatively large piece of bark fibre. Other finds included 13 stone net weights, 9 potsherds and 1 bone. Preliminary dating of these finds places them in the Šventoji lagoon lake period - between 3200 and 2700 BC. The land plot of 9A Elijos St., measuring 0.9328 ha in size, was explored using test pits (1 x 1, 2 x 1, and 2 x 2 m in size), with a total excavation area of 101 m2. Excavation allowed us to determine that the majority of the land plot falls within the shoreline area of the ancient Šventoji lagoon lake. Lake sediment deposits were recorded across test pits in a 75-m-long stretch beneath ploughed soil, reaching a depth of Hab = 0.46 m in the E and H b = 0.47 m in the W part of the studied area.Alluvial sediments deposited by a river that flowed through the area during the Bronze Age were found above the ancient lake sapropel in five test pits. Excavation yielded 15 mostly wooden artefacts, which can be tentatively dated to the ancient lagoon lake settlement period, i. e., 3200-2700 BC. At the land plot of 13B Šviesos St. in Monciškės, a 1 x 62.72 m trench was excavated. An archaeological layer measuring around 12 cm in thickness was recorded in the E part of the trench in the area of the ancient lake shoreline, just under the turf. A total of 27 finds were recovered in a 5 m2 area, consisting mostly of worked amber flakes. The W part of the excavation, where isolated stone net weights were found, was situated within the shoreline area of the ancient lake. A piece of birch bark which was wrapped around one of the net weights was dated to 3336-2938 BC using AMS 14C. The remainder of the finds should be broadly dated to the same lagoon lake settlement period of 3200-2700 BC. At 20 Žiemgalos St., investigations were carried out in two phases on a 0.2 ha plot. In the first stage, a total of 20 test pits 1 x 1 m were investigated (total area of 20 m2). The stratigraphy of the coastal zone of the Šventoji ancient lake zone was recorded. In the second stage of investigations, the part of the site that was not covered with trees was ploughed (about 0.17 ha). The ploughed area was inspected visually. A total of 12 finds were recovered during the survey, among which worked amber flakes predominated.
