Unknown hillfort sites near the Jūra, Neris, and Širvinta
Summary / Abstract:

LTKPC archeologai 2008 m. vasarą ir rudenį žvalgė keletą naujai aptiktų piliakalnių. Tauragės r. Mažonų seniūnijoje, šalia Rekstukų kaimo, prie Jūros upės esantį iki tol nežinomą piliakalnį surado ir apie jį KPD bei KPC pranešė Kauno Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto docentas daktaras Vytenis Almonaitis. Duomenis apie kitus piliakalnius KPC perdavė pirmininkas Zenonas Baubonis, kuriam savo ruožtu apie juos pranešė Darius Stončius. Žvalgymo išvykų metu šie piliakalniai buvo aplankyti, nustatytos jų teritorijos, GPS prietaisu užfiksuotos teritorijų kampų koordinatės [p. 471].

ENDuring the spring – autumn of 2008, KPC archaeologists surveyed four newly found hillfort sites, which were reported by different individuals. The Rekstukai hillfort site and outworks on the river Jūra was surveyed in Tauragė District. It has been partially washed away by the Jūra, leaving an 18 x 10 m flat hilltop with a bank up to 2 m high and a ditch outside it. Two Brižiai (Noselėnai) hillfort sites were found on the right bank of the Neris in Švenčionys District. The first hillfort site has been severely eroded by the Neris: only a 25 x 6 m area of the flat hilltop remains, a 2 m deep ditch and 2.5 m high earthwork created from it blocking the path to the top. Brushed pottery was found on it. The second hillfort site is somewhat to the SE of the first and has a triangular 35 x 35 m flat hilltop with a 1.5m high earthwork and a ditch beyond it. Mantinionys hillfort site on the left bank of the Širvinta was surveyed in Širvintos District. Its hilltop is 15 x 10 m and access to the top is blocked by an earthwork and a 0.8 m deep ditch. The hillfort sites date to the 1st millennium or even the early 2nd millennium.
