ENThe paper’s goal is to systematize the activities of the House of Gediminids as political contesters. It is the first attempt ever in historiography to approach this issue in such a way. The author’s arguments are treated as a research hypothesis, which is obvious in the case of an issue which is so ‘delicate’ as its concerns people’s intentions interpretations of which are always, to a large extent, subjective. The author tries to name various, successful and unsuccessful, attempts to question the political and dynastic status quo in Lithuania by the members of the reigning dynasty. One may agree or disagree with the terms proposed, but they all have been the result of a detailed analysis of the sources. At the end of the paper a few additional insights are presented, which are the result of tracking of the Gediminids’ contesting activities. Keywords: Lithuania, the Gediminids, dynastic politics, power struggle.
