LT2008 m.
ENIn 2008 ŠAM conducted a field evaluation at Rūdės St. 27F and on Varpo Street between Vytauto and Vilniaus Streets. A total of 16.8 m2 were excavated and 347.7 m2 surveyed. In 2008 a total of 16.8 m2 were excavated and a total of 362.1 m2 surveyed. On the basis of investigators’ conclusions, it is possible to state that the development of the segment of Varpo Street at houses 7–15 occurred only in the second half of the 19th – early 20th century and at building 17 in the 17th–18th century, which is confirmed by the 1801 plan of the city. Several valuable finds from the second half of the 19th – early 20th century were discovered here. One was a complete sealed mineral water bottle. The inscription ‘OBER SALZZBURNN’ runs around the edge of the bottom while a symbol is displayed in the centre. The bottle comes from the town of Ober Salzzburnn, which was famous for mineral water and was at that time in the province of Silesia of the German Imperial Kingdom of Prussia. Other finds include a Jewish dreidel, buttons, a pipe, and two lead seals: an 1881 Virbalis customs seal and a seal from a Narva textile factory from the second half of the 19th century. 19th–20th-century and several 17th-century rustic pottery sherds were collected at Rūdės St. 27F. No archaeologically valuable cultural layer was found. The investigated layer was formed by filling in the Rūdė stream. The 2008 excavations in Šiauliai supplement the information about the course of the city’s development during the 17th–20th centuries and valuable material was collected about the daily life of the residents of Šiauliai in the late 19th – early 20th centuries.
