Summary / Abstract:

ENDuring 2007–2008 an excavation (about 176 m2) was conducted on the plot at Kurpių St. 3 in Klaipėda Old Town. On the basis of the archaeological data, the preliminary analysis of the finds, and dendrochronological tests, it is possible to summarise the development of the quarter at Kurpių St. 3. The area was damp prior to the formation of the plots. Flood layers that arose during the process of the formation of the anė delta were discovered in the first and second plots. After filling in part of the lake, the second plot was formed first and a residential home with an addition, which both date to 1542 / 1554 – 1678, erected on it. The first and third plots were developed later. Two non-contemporary outbuildings were discovered on the first plot. The earliest warehouse dates to the late 16th – early 17th century while the second to the early 17th century – 1678. An animal shed was erected on the same plot in about the late 16th century. warehouse building dating to the late 16th / early 17th century – 1678 also stood on the third plot. The façades of the buildings in all three plots were oriented towards Kalvių Street, while the courtyards were on Kurpių Street. The quarter’s buildings burned down during the 1678 fire, the remains of which were discovered everywhere in the excavated area. Several thousand finds were collected during the excavation. The spectrum of mid-16th – late 17th-century finds is very broad: household items, the remains of human apparel, stove tiles, structural ceramics, iron artefacts, and iron tools.
