Excavations in Klaipėda Old Town
Summary / Abstract:

LT2008 m. BRIAI vykdė žvalgomuosius ir archeologinius tyrinėjimus 4 sklypuose Klaipėdos senamiestyje [p. 340].

ENIn 2008 the BRIAI conducted excavations at four locations in Klaipėda Old Town. A total of 448 m2 were excavated in an area of almost 4,7 ha on the plots at Bastionų St. 8, Gluosnių St. 1, and Gluosnių St. 11. On the basis of data from historical sources, the settlements of Pelenynas (Aschhof), Malūnų kalnas (Mülenberg), and Baltikalnė (Baltikallen) existed at these locations. During the investigation, a levelling layer of clay was discovered near the ditch of the 17th–18th-century defensive fortifications of the city of Klaipėda. Under this layer lay a 17th–18th-century cultural layer with finds characteristic of economic and household human activities. The boundaries of this cultural layer end about 170 m from the city’s defensive ditch. The remains of no contemporary development were discovered. A 100 m2 trench was excavated on the plot at Daržų St. 7. During the excavation, three development horizons dating to the late 16th – mid-18th centuries were distinguished on the plot. The earliest development was a wooden outbuilding that burned down in the early 17th century. The foundations in the second and third horizons probably belong to masonry buildings. The first building was erected in the late 17th – early 18th century, and somewhat later (about the middle – second half of the 18th century) its reconstruction is traced within the span of the same building foundation. The building may have been demolished in the mid-20th century.Three areas (a total of 231 m2) were excavated on the plot at Didžioji Vandens St. 18. A 2.3 m thick cultural layer, in which four development horizons were distinguished, was recorded at the excavation site. The first development dates to the late 16th – early 17th century. It is marked by the foundation of a framework building that was set on the ground surface: oak logs and large field stones. The remains of an outbuilding dating to the middle – second half of the 17th century and the cut bone and horn blanks scattered in its vicinity are attributed to the next horizon. The foundation of the SW wall of a building dating to the early 18th century is attributed to the third horizon. It is field stone and brick foundation bound with clay that is characteristic of the foundations of half-timbered buildings. The latest development was discovered along the plot’s boundary with Bažnyčių Street. This is a fragment of a small 19th-century building, which continues under Bažnyčių Street. Three trenches (a total of 50 m2) were excavated on Šaltkalvių Street. The earliest traces of domestic activity are a wicker fence dating to the early 17th-century. Trenches 2 and 3 contained a wooden channel, through which water was probably drained from the basements of the masonry buildings that stood on present-day Tiltų Street. In the 19th-century a masonry building was erected on Šaltkalvių Street and the courtyard paved with field stones.
