ENIn 2008 the storm drain network was reconstructed in the part of Kaunas Old Town. The work occurred in the S part of Palangos Street as well as on Druskininkų and Puodžių Streets. The majority of the cultural layers here had been destroyed by previously laid utility networks. 531 m of the 0.6–3 m thick cultural layers, which have partially survived, were recorded during the survey. On top of the sterile soil characteristic of Kaunas Old Town, i. e. brownish oxidised sandy loam, was a ferrous hard layer characteristic of old Kaunas streets. On top of this was a 20–40 cm thick layer of dark humus with bone debris, gravel, and small pieces of rubble. The layer contained structural ceramics and household pottery dating to the early 16th – early 17th centuries. The 18th–19th-century street surfaces had had removed and field stone paving laid, which, maintained and relaid, was used up until the mid-20th century. The pad for a stove of uncertain purpose and the foundation of probably a 19th-century building were recorded in the carriageway on Druskininkų Street, which shows that the street had been much narrower at this location.
