A total area of 77.4 m2 was excavated in Joniškis in 2008 and a total area of 824 m2 was surveyed. Layers dating to the 17th–18th centuries were discovered at Miesto Square 7, to the second half of the 17th – first half of the 19th centuries at Dariaus ir Girėno St. 20 and 23 and Šiaulių Senosios St. 32 and 36, non-informative layers dating to the second half of the 19th–20th centuries at M. Slančiausko St. 1–5, Parko St. 2–8, Dariaus ir Girėno St. 16–20, and Latvių St. 16–21. The excavation at Miesto Square 7 provided information about the course of the development of the part of the former Turgaus Square: a 17th–18th-century cultural layer, the stone foundation from a building, and contemporary artefacts (17th–18th-century household pottery, 17th–19th-century stove tiles, 17th and 19th-century coins, seals, an iron spur with a spike, and a white kaolin pipe stem were discovered here at a depth of 80–130 cm. Some artefacts (a trim stove tile fragment, the spur, and a lead seal) were discovered in Joniškis for the first time. The excavations at Dariaus ir Girėno St. 20 and 23 and at Šiaulių Senosios St. 32 and 36 provided valuable information about the course of the development of this part of the city. A cultural layer dating to the second half of the 17th – first half of the 19th centuries, the foundations from two buildings, stone courtyard (?) paving, the remains of two woven fences, a storage pit, a layer of stable manure (?), and contemporary artefacts (wheel thrown household pottery, ‘pot-shaped’ (Topfkachel) and flat stove tile sherds, fragments of leather footwear, a clay whistle, a bronze brooch, part of a ring, two Russian Imperial copper five-kopeck coins, three glass beads, three iron locks, a fire striker, a chain from a scale (?), a drawknife, a cooper’s two-handed round shave, horseshoes, a lead seal blank, a pellet, etc. were discovered here at a depth of 70–80 cm.
