LTAlytaus miesto savivaldybės užsakymu IĮ „Senų senovė“ atliko Alytaus aikštės pirmajame Alytuje teritorijos žvalgomuosius archeologinius tyrimus, susijusius su jos sutvarkymo projekto rengimu [p. 295].
EN27 test pits (a total area of 117 m2) were excavated in Pirmojo Alytaus (First Alytus) Square. Under a layer of later fill, a cultural layer was discovered which was from 5–8 cm to 1.6 m thick and consisted of sandy black earth with charred wood particles. It contained many artefacts and artefact fragments characteristic of 16th–18th-century old towns: coins (1620–20th-century), fire strikers, hand built and wheel thrown pottery sherds, ‘pot-shaped’ (Topfkachel) and flat stove tiles, iron arrowheads, knives, shoe fittings and heel plates, handforged nails, buttons, and bullets. Old place of Alytus Square was located in the corner of the current square.
