Summary / Abstract:

ENIn 2008 the conducted an excavation in the churchyard of the Church of St Stephen. During it, four trenches (a total area of 200 m2) were excavated at the site of the waterproofing of the church’s foundation (a 2 m wide strip around the entire outside perimeter of the church wall). 121 undisturbed human burials were discovered. All of the individuals were buried supine in coffins, heads to the W, and many without grave goods. Individuals of various ages and both sexes were buried along the church wall: the skeletons of 22 males, 32 females, and 67 individuals of undetermined sex were identified. There were 63 adult burials, the most frequently encountered age group, 24 child burials, 17 infant burials, and 16 newborn burials. The remains of at least 27 destroyed burials were also discovered in the trenches. Fragments of a masonry wall from the period of the church’s original construction were discovered in the part beside the apse. Its purpose is not clear. The remains of a 19th-century masonry wing and 20th-century stone paving were recorded beside the church’s wall. The paving was created from broken grave stones. Part of a grave stone with the coat-of-arms of the ducal Sapiega family was found here. The remains of a fence foundation were discovered alongside the church’s wall and church’s entrance doorsill with a recess was discovered near the W wall.
