Field survey and evaluation in Dainų valley on the grounds of Kalnų park in Vilnius
Summary / Abstract:

LT2008 m.

ENIn 2008, complex investigations, which included geologists and geophysicists together with archaeologists, were conducted in the area of Dainų valley in Kalnų park in Vilnius. The goal of the investigation was to determine the outer boundaries, thickness, and chronology of the archaeologically valuable cultural layer as well as the valley’s original relief. The investigation material attests that the area’s relief changed sharply during the period of the existence of the Curvum Castrum and the Vilnius Upper City. The main ‘points’ of these changes were determined: the location of two geologically formed gullies was found, the fact that terraces existed in the SE-NW axis of the Dainų valley was established, the fill nature of the hill, on which tribune V of the stage that stands there now, was determined, the development that existed in the Dainų valley during the period the Upper City existed and its relationship with the relief were hypothetically made clearer, and the axes of the main roads were made clearer. All these data allow one to see afresh the defensive strategy of the Curvum Castrum – Upper City and the questions of the appearance and disappearance of the Upper City. During the archaeological field evaluation, a 0.22–3.5 m thick cultural layer dating to the 14th–20th centuries was located. The remains of the suspected graves of German prisoners of war from the econd World War were discovered.
