ENIn the spring of 2008, human bones were discovered in a utility ditch near the bridge over the Nevėžys on the edge of the town of Naujamiestis (Panevėžys District). In the autumn of 2008, 21 m2 was excavated, unearthing two inhumations under the road’s embankment at a depth of 98–115 cm. Few grave goods were found in either burial: in burial 1 (of a female) a single-edged iron knife was found near the right pelvic bone, and the clothing was fastened in the chest area with a bronze brooch; in burial 2 (of a male) a 1578 Lithuanian silver two-denarius coin from the reign of Stephen Báthory had been placed under the head. The individuals had been buried in plank coffins. The excavation conducted in 2008 showed that during the 16th–17th centuries the old cemetery of the Naujamiestis Catholic community was on the right bank of the river Nevėžys near the road to Upytė.
