Summary / Abstract:

LT2008 m. Vedrių piliakalnyje ir papėdės gyvenvietėje ištirtas bendras 104,5 m2 dydžio plotas, iš kurių 47,5 m2 tyrinėta piliakalnio liekanose, 57 m2 – pietinėje papėdėje esančioje papėdės gyvenvietėje [p. 95].

ENThe excavation, begun in 2005, of the remains of Vedriai hillfort and part of the associated unenclosed settlement, which is being destroyed by the river Akmenynas (West Lithuania, Šilalė District), was completed in 2008. A total area of 47.5 m2 was excavated at the hillfort’s remains and 47.5 m2 at the settlement site. A 3 m wide, 0.6 m deep ditch was excavated on the hill’s S slope. After making a sondage of the slope of the remaining part, it was determined that in building it, an area up to 4 m wide had been removed at the bottom of the hill. A cultural layer up to 2.1 m thick with the remains of two hearths, four pits of uncertain purpose, and various finds: ornaments, tools, hand built pottery, animal bones, and even decorated clay daub was discovered in the unenclosed settlement. The artefacts date to the late 1st – early 2nd millennium. During 2005–2008, a total area of 305.5 m2 (16 areas) was excavated at the Vedriai hillfort and unenclosed settlement site, 146 m2 (6 areas) at the unenclosed settlement site.
