ENIn 2009 information was collected about two sunken submarines W-16 and W-19. Both of these vessels are outside Lithuania’s territorial waters. The W-16 is a German type VIIC U-boat, the U-580. This vessel perished on 11 November 1941 during a training exercise when it collided with the merchant ship, Angelburg. In 2008 a strange object was detected at a depth of 37–38 m. This sunken wreck is over 13.3 nautical miles offshore. The sunken submarine is lying on the sand, bottom up. The conning tower is buried in the sand. In the visible part, a hole created in the hull was found. A signal explosive device with a German inscription was pulled out of the hole. In 2007, the W-19, a sunken submarine, was detected over 18.6 nautical miles offshore. The depth at the site of the sunken wreck is 43 m; the bottom is smooth and sandy. The vessel has broken in two. The finds show that this is a Soviet submarine. The assumption was made that this is the C-10, which sank in 1941. In 2009 the stern was inspected. The characteristic structural details: the hydroplane guard, the vertical rudder, one of the two propellers, the torpedo tube opening, and the longitudinal ballast tanks are not characteristic of type C submarines. It is thought that the W-19 is not the C-10, but a smaller type Щ (Щука) submarine. Another field survey would be expedient.
